Trauma-Informed Practices in Play Therapy

Phase II: 12 CEs - CORE Curriculum Course

The word “trauma” is a word that can be used to describe a variety of situations a person has experienced that they have difficulty coping with on a daily basis. This two-day training will provide attendees with an overview of the different types of trauma, how grief and trauma affects clients of all ages and the impact of trauma on the brain.  Effective techniques to safely and respectfully support clients through the trauma narrative and healing process will also be explored.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Discover the importance of providing clients with trauma-informed play therapy.
  2. Explore various play therapy techniques that support victims of grief and trauma.
  3. Utilize specific play therapy interventions that build resiliency in clients of all ages in the play therapy process.
  4. Examine the role mindfulness and self-regulation in the playroom when working with this population.
  5. Define grief and explore its impact on play in the playroom in clients of all ages.
  6. Survey the different types of trauma and how it affects clients across the lifespan. 
  7. Compare the difference between trauma and grief.
  8. Discuss the impact of trauma on brain development and the importance of providing developmentally appropriate play therapy techniques to support the client.
  9. Evaluate effective play therapy techniques to implement with clients in the different stages of the play therapy process. 
  10. Utilize play therapy techniques to support clients through the trauma narrative & healing process.
  11. Examine the use of trauma-informed therapy practices in the playroom.
  12. Learn how to prioritize self-care for the play therapist who may experience vicarious trauma ​.

Please note: *Attendees are reminded that registration for a training must be cancelled within 48 hours of payment in order to receive a FULL refund* To request a change to a training, please email us at stlplaytherapy@gmail.com. Cancellations that are made seven days before the training date will given the option for either a refund less a $25 administration fee or a credit towards a future training. The refund amount will be for the amount paid for the training less a $25 administration fee.  All refunds will be mailed 60 days after request.  For persons requesting a credit, they will receive an individualized code for the amount to be used for a future training.

Trainings will be held at: 1123 Locust St, St. Louis, MO 63101. All full day trainings run from 9 AM to 4:00 PM, with a lunch break between 12-1pm.  Please note that while many trainings are on Thursdays and Fridays, in an effort to accommodate requests, some trainings fall on different days of the week.
