The recent racial justice movement has further highlighted the need for play therapists’ to recognize the unique needs of marginalized clients. A core ethical component is for clinicians to be mindful of their implicit biases. But what exactly does that mean? This training will challenge the play therapist to evaluate the way they treat and view the behaviors of minorities in the playroom and beyond. Additionally, attendees will learn how to apply the important characteristics of minority populations and gain strategies to engage them in culturally-competent play therapy. Interventions include play therapy games and activities for youth from marginalized communities including children of color and LGBTQ youth. Participants will:
- Identify how bias may appear in the playroom.
- Analyze culturally-competent play therapy interventions to be used with marginalized clients.
- List the guidelines for a culturally competent play therapist.
- Utilize play interventions to use in family and group play therapy to encourage cultural pride.
- Describe play interventions to build rapport in the playroom with youth from marginalized communities.
- Create a plan to address bias the play therapist may present in the playroom
