Play Therapy with Non-Suicidal Self-Injury Disorder

Cutting, self-harm, self-abuse, parasuicide, self-injury, and self-mutilation are terms that have been used to describe the behavior now included in the DSM-V as "Non-Suicidal Self-Injury Disorder” (NSSID). Participants in this 2-hour workshop will gain understanding to differentiate between suicidal and non-suicidal self-injury, explore causes in children and adolescents. Exploration of themes to look for in the playroom that may alert the play therapist to a child engaging in self-harming behaviors. Time will also be spent learning play therapy interventions to help children and teens to suppress, manage, and redirect the urge to self-injure.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Apply knowledge of causes/risk factors/prevalence of NSSID in adolescents and young adults in the playroom.
  2. Analyze play therapy techniques to identify the difference between self-harming behavior and suicidal ideations/attempts.
  3. Discuss play therapy techniques to help alleviate or manage NSSI behaviors in adolescents and young adults.

Cancellations that are made seven days before the training date will given the option for either a refund less a $25 administration fee or a credit towards a future training. The refund amount will be for the amount paid for the training less a $25 administration fee.  All refunds will be mailed 60 days after request.  For persons requesting a credit, they will receive an individualized code for the amount to be used for a future training.
