Sexual Abuse: From the Playroom to the Courtroom

This webinar will examine ways to help play therapists become more proficient in working with clients who have experienced sexual abuse.  From setting up the playroom sensitively to preparing to testify in court effectively, every therapist will benefit from this training.  Dawnielle Robinson is both a police officer and a Registered Play Therapist.  She brings a unique, expert perspective to a much needed topic.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Explore how & why trauma is stored in the client’s body and ways in which it can be acted out/communicated during play therapy sessions.
  2. Discuss how sexual abuse might display itself throughout the play therapy process.
  3. Examine the basic concepts regarding forensic interviewing (leading vs non-leading/ open ended questions), in an effort to ensure that the play therapist is representing their discipline ethically and not unintentionally impeding possible investigations.
  4. Learn how to set up the playroom to be forensically sensitive to clients of varying ages and developmental stages.
  5. Discuss ways in which play therapists can work collaboratively with a multi-disciplinary team (initial disclosure forms, hotlines, subpoenas, etc.).
  6. Learn how to effectively prepare for testifying in court as a play therapist (ways to make play therapy stand up in court/ collaborative details, expert testimony, when to expound, how to deal with cross).
